It is interesting to see how suddenly emerged so many experts on life and teachings of rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Most of the discussions about him (on social networks or media) are framed by several statements - whether authentic or taken out of context by journalists - which he spoke around ninetieth year of his life. Yes, the politicization of the rabbi's activities brought many controversies, including explicitly negative statements from the time of his very advanced age. (Btw. If you're more interested in some of them - they can be found in a wider context, in the book "The rabbis of our time").
I am asking why in discussions are not almost never mentioned other things which the rabbi did throughout his life? Do those debaters who talk about alleged racism of rabbi Yosef that he was supporter of the peace process in the 90ties and that he played in this respect an very important role? Do they know that one of the main principles of why he did so, was that "The highest value of Torah is human life"? Do they know that his efforts helped to reduce discrimination and sometimes racism against Sephardim from some Israeli Ashkenazim? Do they know that he personally participated in the celebrations of Ramadan and spoke Arabic with the Arabs, because he was himself at least a little bit "Arab Jew" who was born in Baghdad and was given the name Abdullah?
To conclude: If anyone wants to judge the majority of the Middle Eastern personalities - and it does not matter whether Jewish, Arab, Iranian or other - and reads the few articles on the Internet, he/she could be almost certain that the short time devoted to this issue could have been devoted to the more meaningful use.
Je zajímavé sledovat, jak se najednou vynořilo u nás tolik i v zahraničí tolik odborníků na rabína Ovadju Josefa. V naprosté většině jsou diskuse (na sociálních sítích i v médiích) o něm zarámovány několika výroky - ať už skutečnými, či vytrženými novináři z kontextu - které pronesl kolem devadesátého roku svého života. Ano, zpolitizování rabínovy činnosti přineslo mnoho rozporuplných i výslovně negativních výroků, na kterých se zřejmě podepsal i jeho velmi vysoký věk. Pokud vás více zajímají, některé z nich najdete v širším kontextu v knize "Rabíni naší doby".
Proč ale v dikusích většinou nikdo nezmíní, co rabín dělal během celého svého života? Ví ti, kteří mluví o rabínově domnělém rasismu, že Josef podporoval mírový proces a v 90. letech hrál v tomto ohledu důležitou úlohu? Ví, že jeden z hlavních principů proč tak činil, byl že "Podle Tóry má nejvyšší hodnotu lidský život"? Tuší, že se zasadil o snížení diskriminace a někdy i rasismu některých Aškenázů vůči Sefardům v Izraeli, že se osobně účastnil oslav Ramadánu a mluvil s Araby arabsky, protože byl tak trochu i on sám "židovský Arab", který se narodil v Bagdádu a dostal jméno Abdalláh?
Chce-li někdo soudit většinu blízkovýchodních osobnosti - a je už jedno jestli židovských, arabských, íránských či jiných - a přečte si k tomu pár článků na internetu, může si být takřka jistý, že ten krátký čas, který jim věnoval, mohl využít smysluplněji.
